Between June 1994 and March 1995 the Record Office ran an oral history competition sponsored by the Bedford Branch of the Nationwide Building Society. A prize of £100 was offered for the best collection of oral history reminiscences submitted to the Record Office by the closing date of the 1 March 1995. The competition was open to groups and individuals who had to interview at least four persons resident in Bedfordshire. The transcript of each interview was required to be typewritten onto A4 size paper and accompanied by a photograph (preferably black and white) of each person interviewed.
There were three entries which were judged, two late entries which were not judged, and one entry which was disqualified for being in the form of a cassette tape. The panel of judges for the competition were Mr. Adrian Bean, Manager of the Bedford Branch of the Nationwide Building Society, Mr. Martin Lawrence Chairman of the Bedfordshire Local History Society, and Mr. Christopher Pickford, the County Archivist, who judged the entries during April. The First Prize went to Shillington WI (see CRS21/5) and the Second Prize went to the Dunstable & District Local History Society see CRS21/3), the prizes were presented to the winners at a reception held at the Record Office on the 1 May 1995.
The entries represent a wide range of oral history across the county.
