- Scope and ContentWilliam Newton: he was the son of John Newton and assisted him on the business of his farm. On 12 June his father had in the stable in the farm yard. He used the missing items in the course of his day. About 2pm on that day he hung the harness up in the stable and left the fork in the barn. He went into the stable several times but did not miss the harness. On the following Monday he went to the stable and found the harness gone. He missed the fork from the barn. He told his father of the loss. They heard nothing until the previous Sunday when he was informed that the articles were in the possession of William Elsom at Pertnehall. On Monday 8 September he went with the constable to the lodging of William Elsom and found the 2 hip straps and cruppers, the value of 10 shillings, the 2 rings, with a value of 10 shillings and the hay fork with the value of a shilling. They were his father’s property and stolen from the stable between Friday 20 and Monday 23 June 1834. Jacob Ayres: on Saturday 6 September he searched the lodging of William Elsom. They found several articles belonging to Ekins Simpson. They also found articles which William Newton identified as his father’s property. Statement of the accused: he took the thing and put them in the truck. It was in the morning after his mother went to work.
