Letter from George Smith, gaoler of Huntingdon County Gaol to Neville Day, solicitor

he had been informed that a prisoner by the name of Elsom, who had been in his custody, was due for trial at the Bedford Michaelmas Sessions. He had 2 prisoners named Elsom, John and William, both convicted at the Lent 18333 assize of stealing barley, property of John Wardworth of Kimbolton. They were sentenced to a year’s hard labour. He wished to add Mr Baron Bollard before whom they were toed considered their case very aggravated and had made up his mind to transport them both had not a witness bore testimony in their favour for former conduct. Both prisoners had convicted themselves with great propriety during their confinement. John Elsom - late of Pertenhall - a labourer - aged 34 years - height 5ft 5" - sallow complexion - sandy brown hair and whiskers - grey eyes - long visage - married - 3 children the eldest being 4 and the youngest 6 months - has lost his left thumb n and the first joint. William Elsom - late of Pertenhall - a labourer - aged 29 years - height 5ft 4" - fresh complexion - brown hair - grey eyes - rather long visage - small scare on forehead - single - walks rather stooping and had a rather stupid appearance and is a little deaf.
