Correspondence with Yorkshire Aeroplane Club Limited regarding an article published in ‘Aeroplane’ magazine. Copy letter from J B Allen to Lieutenant Colonel Walker, Secretary of the Yorkshire Aeroplane Club; ‘Are you quite sure of your figures regarding Mr Critchley’s flying? Supposing Mr Critchley commenced flying in 1912 – an early date for most of us – he would have to average over 280 hours a year to amass the almost unbelievable total of 2000 hours by 1916.’ [25 Jan 1928] Reply from Mr A Critchley, Elmhurst, Newton Road, Leeds. ‘…very few people are ever ‘sure’ of their figures…there were a large number of pilots who came through the war and who joined in 1915 and 1916, not 1912, and who had in 1919 completed their 2000 hours in the air. An instructor who regularly did 4 or 5 hours a day flying and who was in a Home Defence Squadron flying most nights, in all weathers…soon has a few hundred hours to his credit. Along with this, if two, in some cases three, full terms overseas are completed, especially in a fighting Squadron where one is on ‘long recons’ regularly, and six hour patrols occasionally, it doesn’t seem very difficult to me, to accomplish what appears to you to be unbelievable.’[2 Feb 1928].
