    Abstract of Title of the Bedford and Cambridge Railway Company to a close of land in Cardington - Number 7 on the company’s deposited plans (I) Inclosure Award for Cardington of 15th July 1808 allotted to the Mayor and Burgesses of the Borough of Bedford (a) a piece of land in Fenlake Meadow containing 2 acres, 3 roods, 28 poles bounded: S by the road from Fenlake to Bedford; W by leasehold allotment to John Howard Channing; N by the seventh allotment to John Howard Channing; E by the first allotment to the Duke of Bedford with the need for the Borough to maintain fences etc. on the S and E sides (II) Mortgage of 1 July 1850 Parties: (i) Mayor and Burgesses of Bedford (ii) Thomas Small, Treasurer of the Borough of Bedford (iii) Sir William Gibson Craig, baronet; Richard Montesquieu Bellow, esquire; Henry Rich, esquire – Lords Commissioners of the Treasuey (iv) Thomas Barnard of Bedford, banker Reciting: - contract between (i) and the Clerk of the Peace for the erection of a new prison to which the Borough should contribute one tenth of the costs if a separate Borough Quarter Sessions was granted; - grant by Letters Patent of a separate Borough Quarter Sessions in 6 William IV; - rebuilding the prison and house of correction at a cost of £19,500; - (i) considered it expedient to mortgage scheduled lands (including (a)) to raise the £1,950 which was their share of the rebuilding; - notice of the intention to mortgage was “fixed on the outer door of the County Hall (being a public and conspicuous place within the said Borough wherein the Meetings of the said Borough were held) 1 Calendar month at least before such application” and a copy sent to (iii); - (iii) under the hand of William Goodenough Hayter raised no objection to (i) raising up to £1,950 at 4.23% (£4/2/4); Operative Part: - (iv) paid £1,950 to (ii) for the use of (i); - (i), with the approbation of (iii) granted scheduled property including (a) to (iv) subject to the equity of redemption Property: (a) 2 acres, 3 roods, 28 poles in Fenlake Meadow, Cardington in the occupation of Thomas Waldock [but see (IV) in R6/9/1/1] Covenant - by (i) to set apart at least 6.5% of the principal sum each year as a sinking fund in paying off the principal and invest it in Exchequer bills or Government securities (III) Will of Thomas Barnard of 14 October 1852 appointing his sons Talbot Barnard and Thomas Barnard as his executors and devising all real estate that he held as trustee to them (IV) Death of Thomas Barnard on 3 June 1853 (V) Proof of the will of Thomas Barnard in PCC 29 June 1853
