- Scope and ContentLetter from W E Lawson of 29 Cheapside Brighton submitted as a character reference for the defendant: "John Driscoll has worked for me off and on for several years and I found him straight forward and honest. I have known him for the last 25 years and I have never known him to do any thing wrong: so therefore in honesty and justice I really must give him a good name. He has known my father many years, and my father always spoke well of him - who has been under government employment for over forty years partly in the naval prison. I hope you have not got yourself into any serious trouble, as you always kept yourself straight forward and alright, ever since I have known you the officials of this prison can rely on what I am saying is the truth. I hope you will get yourself out of the trouble for your own sake. I should like to see you again some day because if I have any work to spare I shall certainly give you a job. We all send our best wishes to you. Will you kindly answer this letter and let me know how you are getting on? There is more than one could give him a good name. I remain yours respectfully"
