Joseph Wright: he locked the barn door between 9pm and 10pm. He had sent he scythe on the course of the day hanging in the barn. He went next morning to look for the scythe and it was gone. The scythe produced was that which had hung in the barn the previous day. James Messenger: he was employed by Mary Griffith and by her desire he was sent to Studham in search of Joseph Causton who she suspected of having stolen the scythe. He was on Studham Common when he saw Causton with the scythe. Caustin said he was going a mowing and he told Caustin he must not go with that scythe as it was Mrs Griffith scythe. The prisoner said he knew that. They went to the beer shop on Studham Common where they remained until Willis [?] the constable came.
