This Deponent Charles Huckle on his Oath saith as follows:- I am a labourer at Biggleswade. On Tuesday 18th October I was near the Crown Inn I saw John Ireland turn into the Crown Yard – it was about 8 pm. He passed close to me on the pavement – I did not see that he carried anything. I stood in the High St. and saw him go out of the Crown Yard at the back into Brewery Lane. He had something in his hand but I could not say what it was. He seemed to have got it under his arm – I spoke to Frederick Basterfield the Ostler – he ran after Ireland and brought him back and the Ostler had the rug now produced. This Deponent Frederick Basterfield I am Ostler at the Crown Inn Biggleswade – about 7 pm on the 18th October I had a pony and trap given in my charge. I tied up the pony and got a horse rug and threw it over the pony – the rug now produced is the one - I saw the rug on the pony about 7.50 – I went into the house for 5 or 6 minutes and when I came out I saw the rug was not on the pony nor one on the ground – I saw Charles Huckle and spoke to him – from what he said I ran up Brewery Lane. I followed the man up Brewery Lane and along Rose Terrace I made enquires as I went along. When I got to the Board School Bridge I saw the prisoner and said Old friend I want you – He said “You’ve copped me” He was carrying the rug produced. When he said “You’ve copped me” he threw the rug on my left shoulder – I seized him by the shoulder and said I want you to come with me – He came with me to the Crown Yard and I left the prisoner with my master Charles Marsom and fetched Supt.
