The parish of Luton is very large containing nearly 17000 acres with a population of nearly 6000. The rates have been for a long time unequal and at a public vestry held on the 17 March 1831. The following resolutions have been agreed to: i/ a new assessment is necessary. ii/ a survey of the parish is necessary and that a proper person be appointed for that purpose. iii/ Mr Rowed and Mr Sedgewick unanimously appointed to make the valuation and assessment. Resolution made at the subsequent meeting held on 16 September 1831: i/ that the parish officers be authorised to advanced to Mr Davies the sum of £200 during the survey and the remainder be paid on completion of the survey. ii/ the offer of Messrs Rowes and Sedgewick to value to the parish for the sum of £600 is accepted on condition the sum is not paid until after Easter 1833. iii/ Messrs Williamson and Austin to be employed by the parish officers to carry the above resolutions into the effect and that the parish officers tae the necessary steps for getting the resolutions and proceedings confirmed and allowed at the Quarter Sessions.
