Sale catalogue for Toddington Manor; • agents: Strutt & Parker; • description: “A substantial and historic Grade II listed country house originally built in 1560 … Toddington manor was built in 1560 by Lord Henry Cheney. He was knighted at Toddington by Queen Elizabeth I in 1563. He died in 1587 and his great-nephew Thomas Wentworth, later Earl of Cleveland, inherited the Estate 27 years later. On Cleveland’s death, his granddaughter Henrietta Maria, Baroness Wentworth inherited Toddington. Henrietta began an affair with an illegitimate son of Charles II, the Duke of Monmouth. After the duke’s involvement in the Rye House plot was exposed, he was ordered out of the Kingdom. He spent some time with Henrietta at Toddington where it is said that he hid in the Oak tree behind the house before making his way to Holland. Two adjoining rooms in the manor were known as Duke of Monmouth and Little Lady’s Chambers. Henrietta died in 1686, a year after the Duke’s execution following the Battle of Sedgemoor. By 1740 the manor had fallen into neglect and William Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, dismantled much of the property. After the earl’s death, Toddington was inherited by his sister Anne who was married to the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, William Connolly. With no heir, the estate was sold to John Cooper in 1806 who rebuilt much of the manor with his son-in-law William Dodge-Cooper. Following the last Cooper departure in 1905, the manor changed hands three more times before being bought by a research farm in 1948. The current owners purchased the manor from the research farm in 1979 and have restored much of the house as well as the greenhouses and gardens, parts of which were designed by Tania Compton. They have also made some additions; namely the lakes to the east of the house and the croquet lawn”. • layout: ground floor: entrance hall 9 feet 11 inches by 33 feet 11 inches; drawing room 26 feet 4 inches by 33 feet 10 inches; orangery 17 feet 6 inches by 31 feet 1 inch; great hall 26 feet by 36 feet 3 inches; store; lift; scullery; rear hall 19 feet 9 inches by 13 feet 10 inches; study 27 feet 4 inches by 10 feet 3 inches; billiard room 23 feet 9 inches by 17 feet 8 inches; boot room 7 feet 7 inches by 13 feet 6 inches; dining room 20 feet 6 inches by 15 feet 7 inches; kitchen 15 feet 2 inches by 21 feet 4 inches; larder; breakfast room 11 feet 3 inches by 11 feet 11 inches; sitting room 15 feet 1 inch by 22 feet 5 inches; • layout: first floor: master bedroom 20 feet 4 inches by 21 feet 11 inches; dressing room 10 feet 1 inch by 19 feet 1 inch; en-suite bathroom; second dressing room 16 feet 10 inches by 8 feet 9 inches; sauna; tower staircase; lift; bedroom 16 feet 8 inches by 22 feet 10 inches with en-suite bathroom; laundry room; bedroom 16 feet 2 inches by 14 feet 10 inches with en-suite bathroom; bedroom 16 feet by 15 feet 10 inches with en-suite bathroom; bedroom 20 feet 6 inches by 14 feet 8 inches with en-suite bathroom; bedroom 12 feet 2 inches by 8 feet 6 inches with en-suite bathroom; bedroom 24 feet 3 inch by 17 feet 6 inches with en-suite bathroom; • layout: second floor: bathroom; turret staircase; bedrooms 9 feet 2 inches by 13 feet 1 inch; 10 feet 3 inches by 11 feet 7 inches; 19 feet 5 inches by 19 feet 7 inches; 9 feet 6 inches by 16 feet 4 inches; 10 feet 7 inches by 16 feet 4 inches. • layout basement: two cellars • outbuildings: ground floor: range with office 18 feet 10 inches by 27 feet 5 inches; office 15 feet 9 inches by 9 feet 11 inches; office 21 feet 4 inches by 17 feet 2 inches; office 8 feet 10 inches by 12 feet 8 inches; meeting room 9 feet 9 inches by 11 feet 1 inch; exit 8 feet 10 inches by 11 feet 5 inches; garage 20 feet 7 inches by 28 feet 7 inches; garage 19 feet 3 inches by 37 feet 3 inches; workshop 19 feet 7 inches by 28 feet 8 inches; tack room 13 feet 3 inches by 11 feet 7 inches; six stables; gardener’s rest room 12 feet 2 inches by 21 feet 4 inches; gardener’s kitchen 12 feet 1 inch by 14 feet 1 inch; plant room; garage 12 feet 10 inches square; log store; cellar boiler room 11 feet 7 inches by 13 feet 3 inches; • outbuildings: first floor: office storage 42 feet 5 inches by 28 feet 4 inches; flat - bathroom; bedrooms 11 feet by 12 feet 7 inches and 10 feet 10 inches by 11 feet 11 inches; sitting room 19 feet 7 inches by 11 feet 11 inches; kitchen 9 feet 8 inches by 8 feet 11 inches; separate flat - kitchen dining room 21 feet 4 inches by 19 feet 4 inches; sitting room 13 feet 5 inches by 12 feet 10 inches; bedroom 8 feet 4 inches by 11 feet 5 inches; bathroom; bedroom 19 feet 2 inches by 12 feet 5 inches; workshop storage 20 feet 1 inch by 29 feet 7 inches. • Manor Lodge: ground floor: kitchen 12 feet 1 inch by 11 feet 10 inches; drawing room 14 feet by 16 feet 1 inch; utility room; hall; sitting room 12 feet by 12 feet 1 inch; breakfast room 11 feet 11 inches by 6 feet 11 inches; first floor: bathroom; bedrooms 11 feet 1 inch by 11 feet 1 inch; 12 feet by 9 feet 11 inches; 12 feet 2 inches by 11 feet 11 inches; • grounds: “the gardens have been open to the public since 1985”; herb garden, planted 1986 and designed by Lucy Huntingdon; two greenhouses; croquet lawn; summer house with conservatory 11 feet 11 inches by 13 feet 1 inch, dining room 11 feet 1 inch by 34 feet 9 inches, W.
