  • Scope and Content
Examination of Edward Pulley - he is now living in the parish of Astwick and is chargeable to it. He has been married for 5 years and has lived at Astwick for 9 years but has not done anything to gain a settlement there. He came to Astwick from Caldecott (Herts) where he lived for over 3 years. When he first went to Caldecott he went into the service of Mr Inskip. It was 18 weeks before Michaelmas and he agreed to be Mr Inskip's odd man and to look after his nags. From then until Michaelmas he boarded and lodged in his house and received 30s wages. At Michaelmas his master asked whether he wanted to keep on a little while and he agreed to do so. He stayed until Easter at the same work, boarding and lodging in the house. At Easter his master said he must go home a little while and sleep or else he should belong to the parish, and he was to receive 5s a week while he slept at home. He went every morning to do his work and returned home to sleep, then went back to his place. He boarded and lodged at his master's house as before. He did not know what wages he was to have. His master paid him when he liked. When Michaelmas came round again his master asked whether he had any other place to go to and he said no. His master said he might stay on as usual and he stayed that year right round until the next Michaelmas without going home. When Michaelmas came round his master said he might take the under team to look after the next year if he liked. He did so and stayed on until 9 days before Michaelmas and then went away of his own head. His master gave him £3 wages. He never knew what he was to receive. He used to ask his master for money when he wanted any and his master gave him what he liked.
