  • Scope and Content
Recites : Petition of William Hanscombe, 29 April 1690 : by the grant of his custody, Goodman had been entitled to the profits of Hanscombe's estate worth £60 p.a., & in great abuse of the said Hanscombe detained him in a mad house in or near this town and would not suffer any of his friends to see him: At Hanscombe's petition of 10 Jan. 1689/90, the Commissioners, on 16 Jan., conceiving he had been ill - treated by the persons where he was kept, ordered him to be removed to the care of J. Goch, apothecary at Hitchin. Hanscombe declares he has recovered of his indisposition of melancholy and requests the grant of custody to be discharged. The commissioners order the suspension of the grant of custody - but not the absolute discharge, because it would be very expensive to precure a new one if Hanscombe should have a relapse and the smallness of the estate would bear the charge hardly - and give Hanscombe freedom to manage his own affairs. William Cooper Esq. and George Edwards - neighbours of the parties, - are to take an account of the estate and pay just expenses to Goodman and Goch. Goodman has arrested John Flint, tenant to Hanscombe, for arrear of rent, as is pretended : It is ordered that all proceedings at law by Goodman against Flint are hereby stayed.
