Admin/biog history
George Tierney was an old friend of Lord Holland. In 1827 he favoured the coalition with Canning and in May he joined the administration as Master of the Mint with a seat in the Cabinet – for the first time after 40 years as a politician.
Tierney quitted office with Goderich in January 1828 and this marked the end of his political career. He died suddenly on 25 January 1830 and Lord Holland subsequently wrote of him:
“So expired one of my best and oldest friends, and the pleasantest one that public life ever procured me. Indeed so agreeable a man I do not think is left behind him”
