Thomas Cooper: on 14 November he bought a bunch of straw plait at Dunstable market from William Squires. Afterwards Squires came to the Red Lion to be paid and he then showed me another bunch and asked him to buy it. He bought it for 18 shillings. About half an hour later Mrs Willis came to the Red Lion and said she thought she knew the plait. He told her he had bought it from Squires. Squires told him he would pay him and that he should not con the money. Squires paid his wife his money back. The ticket of the plait was the ticket priced. Alice Willis: on 14 November she bought a bunch of straw plait from Mrs Sarah Roberts at Dunstable. She put it in her bag and left it in the room at the Nags Head Inn at Dunstable. About an hour afterwards she missed it. About half an hour later she went to the Red Lion and saw the plait lying on the table there. She said she thought she knew the plait. Thomas Cooper said he had bought the plait from William Squires of Kings Walden. She fetched Mrs Roberts and she said it was her work and the same plait she had sold her. Squires was fetched. Squires said he bought the plait from some woman and he said to Mr Cooper that he would pay him back the money and paid him 18 shillings. The plait was given to her and she took it to Mr Olivers at Nags Head. An hour afterwards Squires said she had no business with the plait and perhaps he could find the woman. She left the plait with Mr Olivers until Saturday when she took it away. Sarah Roberts: on 14 November she sold a bunch of straw plait too Mrs Willis at Dunstable. The plait contained 22 score.
