Depositions of Arthur Thomas Webster, merchant of Luton. Thomas Gardner Attwood, clerk to Mr Webster. John Ulleart, hosier of Sheffield Moor. In the case of Edwin Glenister accused of embezzling the sum of £2 1s 3d.

Arthur Thomas Webster: a merchant and manufacturer at Luton. In the months of May, June and July the defendant was in his employment as a Commercial Traveller and had been from January. The defendant had a salary of £120 a year and £1 a day travelling expenses. The defendant’s duties were to sell goods in the way of trade, to received cash for the same, to inform him of the receipt and to pass the money to him immediately. The ledger showed the amount of £2 1s 3d on the account oh John Ulleart of Sheffield. No part of that sum had been received by him and there was no entry in the cash book. He produced the defendants sale sheet dated 9 July which contained and account of money received and did not included the £2 1s 3d. There was an advice of a sale to Mr Ulleart but not of any money received. Thomas Gardner Attwood: e was clerk to Mr Webster and kept the cash book. The sale note dated 8 July was in Glenister’s handwriting and there was a remittance of £17 1s 0d and on the same note there was a sale of goods to Mr Ulleart. The ledger showed £2 1s 3d on the account of Mr Ulleart and no money had been received. John Ulleart: he was a hosier in Sheffield Moor. On 8 July he paid Glenister £2 1s 3d on behalf of Mr Webster and he was able to produce the receipt signed by Glenister in his presence. He gave Glenister an order on the same day. The account was £1 1s 7d ½ and he selected goods for £2 12s 9d ½ He produced a letter he received from the defendant dated 1 August. Statement of the accused: he had not denied the receipt of the moneys and they had been accounted for. - Letter dated 1 August 1868 signed by G Glenister on the paper of "Arthur Thomas Webster Tuscan & Straw Hat Manufacturer" - Account of Mr John Ulleart of Sheffield Moor - Receipt bearing the name of J Ulleart.
