    Thomas Bunce: he was apprentice to Mr George William Strange, a draper of Wellington Street, Luton. About 2pm on the 2 June he saw a pair of dark brown trousers hanging on a nail outside the shop door. He missed them about 3.50pm. They were worth 9s 6d. Joseph King: he drove one of the town water carts and about 3.40pm on 2 June he was coming down Wellington Street with the water cart. He saw the prisoner against Mr Strange’s shop and saw him reach his right hand up over his head and pull a pair of dark trousers down from the shop. The prisoner put them under his left arm and walked down the street a little way before turning down Peel Street. He informed the police. He had known the prisoner since he was a child. He did not see him again until he was in custody on 14 September. PC George Taylor: he went in search of the prisoner on 2 June and from information he had received and did not find him until 19 September at St Albans in the market there. He charged him and took him into custody. The prisoner said he knew nothing of the trousers. Statement of the accused: he knew nothing of the trousers.
