Statement of Accused
Sir,
In answer to the charge preferred against me of stealing an overcoat from Jabez Foster tailor of Luton, and offering the same for sale to landlord keeping the 'Hare and Hounds' at Luton I wish to state that the article offered for sale by me was a Reefer Jacket which I afterwards sold to a labourer near Harpenden for three shillings, the labourer being an entire stranger to me. The overcoat I know nothing about. I am guilty of stealing a pair of shears from St. Albans. I was two months out of work and starving. The tailoring of late years has become very bad in consequence of which I am often tempted to steal. Humbly asking for a little mercy I have no more to say.
