    Ann Bent: she was a widow and lived at 19 New Street, Luton almost opposite the prisoner. On Saturday 14 December she left an iron boiler and a tin saucepan in her back yard. The yard was fenced in and the gate fastened with a little hook. The boiler and saucepan were safe in the yard at 6pm. She missed them on the morning of Monday 16 December and did not see them again until shown them at the police station. The boiler and saucepan were worth 2s 2d. She heard a noise in her back yard a little after 12 on Saturday night. The yard was entered by a passage from the street. Inspector George James: he produced the boiler and saucepan found in the prisoner’s house on Sunday 15 December with the other articles. The boiler was inside another and in one of the bundle in the prisoner’s kitchen. The saucepan was in another bundle. The prisoner said they belonged to his brother and had come down from London and that his brother frequently sent things down from London. Statement of the accused: his brother had bought all the things and he knew nothing about them.
