    William Kaye: he was foreman to Mrs Rhoda Brown, a blacksmith at Dunton. William Goodship, the defendant, had worked for her as a journeyman up to 31 August. In the course of the following week he missed a screw, a steel [?] and a tap. He obtained a search warrant from a magistrate in the company with PC Wilshere. He went to the little shop in Potton, in which Goodship had a commercial business and found the tap there. It was worth 2 shillings. He asked the prisoner where he got it and the prisoner said he bought to from Daniel Dear. [cross examination] Goodship left Mrs Brown’s of his own will and Mrs Brown had several taps of different kinds. He knew the tap mainly by the way it had been worn in the handle. He had sent he tap about a fortnight before Goodship had left. William Bryant: he had worked for Mrs Brown of Dunton for about 5 months. He knew the tap to be Mrs Brown’s and he had used it many times. He knew it by the handle. PC Marshall Edwin Wilshere: he went with as search warrant to the premises of William Goodship. He found a tap in a drawer. He asked Goodship where he had it from and Goodship said he had bought it from David Dear. He said he had bought the lot in the drawers and the tap was amongst them. David Dear: he knew the defendant and had not sold him a tap of any sort. He gave up the shop and the defendant took the business. Goodship took the bellows and grinds from him and he left some things in the drawers. All 4 of the taps were in the shop when he left. He did not keep taps in the drawers the tap was found in and his were patent taps. Statement of the accused: he reserved his defence.
