- Scope and ContentGeorge Field: he was a pork butcher of Church Street, Luton. About 9.30pm on 1 October he cut up about 16lb of pickled pork and fresh beef for savaloys, and put it into a dish in the front window of the shop. The shop door was then closed. He went into the parlour and heard the shop door open a few minutes afterwards. He went into the shop. The door was open and he did not see anyone. The window was close to the door and he missed the dish and the meat. The dish produced was the same and the meat in it was cut up in the same way he had cut his beef and pork. He informed the police and went to the police station next day and there saw the dish and the meat. The value of what he lost was 9s shillings; 8 shillings of meat and 1 shilling for the dish. PC James Haynes: from information received he went to Bute Street, about 10.15pm on 1 October and prisoner they prisoner there. The prisoner had the dish and the meat. He asked the prisoner where he had it from. The prisoner said he had bought it for a shilling. He took the prisoner to the police station and charged him with stealing it. The prisoner repeated he had bought it for a shilling and was wrongfully charged. He had 5 or 6 pieces of meat from Mrs Lines at the ‘Engine’ the day after the prisoner was in custody. Statement of the accused: nothing.
