William Malin: on 20 September PC Brimley showed him the horse hoe, the wheelbarrow standard and old iron. They were all his. He had lost them out of the hovel in the Folly Yard at Houghton Regis. He could not find them about June. They had all been together and were worth about a shilling. Edward Eames: on 7 September he brought the horse hoe and the wheel standard from Sarah Mitchell. He gave her 5d for them. He bought the hoops from a little boy. He gave all of them up to PC Brimley on 20 September. Sarah Mitchell: she lived at Houghton Regis and was single. She knew the prisoner and she had sold the wheel standard and horse hoe to Edward Eames. He sold one bit on 7 September and the other ‘ever so long ago’. The prisoner gave them to her and she had 3d for one bit and about 4d for the other. Mr Eames knew best what he gave her for them. She gave the money to Taverner. PC William Brimley: he produced the horse hoe, wheel standard and some iron hoops which he had from Edward Eames on 20 September. He charged the prisoner with stealing the quantity of old iron and the prisoner said he had nothing to say about it. William Malin [continued]: on 12 September PC Brimley showed him the wheel of a barrow. He thought it was his. He went to see if he had lost one. He found his was gone out of the hovel in Folly Yard at Houghton. He was sure it was his and was worth 2 shillings. He had seen it safe in his hovel about the beginning of August. He could not get it out for the wood on it. Leonard Saddler: a marine stores dealer of 18 Wellington Street, Luton. He was in Houghton Regis on 12 September and bought a barrow wheel from the prisoner. He gave the prisoner 6d for it. He knew it by the marks where it had been cut with a knife. He gave the wheel to PC Brimley. PC William Brimley: he received the barrow wheel from Saddler and showed it to Malin the same day and again on 23rd. He charged the prisoner with stealing it and the prisoner said ‘very well’. Statement of the accused: he could not say anything as he knew nothing about it.
