- Scope and ContentDeposition of Hannah Cole sworn saith I am the wife of Philip Cole of Ampthill Landlord of the Crown and Sceptre there. On the 16th May 1873 the Defendant came into my house about 3.30 p.m with another man. The Defendant said “Mrs Cole we have come to fetch some horses from Mr. Berwick for Mr. Carter and we are to have some bread and cheese and beer and Carter will make it right on Thursday. Upon that knowing Carter well I drew them 7 pints of beer and 4 penny worth of bread and cheese value 1/6 altogether. The other man said you will find it is quite right Mrs Cole. I supplied the things upon the belief that there statement was true. They were strangers to me. Mr Carter puts up at my house every Thursday. He is a Fishmonger at Bedford who [serves] to Ampthill to sell fish in the market and I knew too that he occasionally bought horses. The said Elias Carter sworn saith I live at Bedford and am a Fishmonger. I am in the habit of selling fish at Ampthill market on Thursday and have done so for the last 27 years. I know the Defendant Whiteman by sight I never authorized him to go to Philip Cole to obtain bread and cheese and beer or anything else at my expense. I did not direct him to fetch horses from Berwicks on the 16th. I had not bought any horses there. The said Joseph Lansberry sworn saith I am a Police Constable stationed at Ampthill. On the 19th May I apprehended the Defendant Whiteman at Bedford in pursuance of Warrant. I stated the charge to him he said I am not guilty. Afterwards he said He done the asking meaning Walker. I helped drink the beer and eat the cheese so I was as bad as he. The foregoing Depositions of Hanna Cole Elias Carter and Joseph Lansberry were taken and sworn on the first day of June 1893 at the County Court Hall in Ampthill in the County of Bedford. Statement of Accused: I have nothing to say.
