  • Scope and Content
Thomas Charles George of Colworth in the parish of Sharnbrook, farmer – Askew has been in his employment as a labourer for 2 ½ years. On May 30 PC Matthews brought Askew to his house and showed him the butter now produced. They compared the butter with what was left in the dairy and it appeared to be the same. He had previously missed butter. Ebenezer Matthews of Sharnbrook, police constable – on 20 may about 6pm he was on duty on the New Lodge Road, Sharnbrook when he met Askew coming from the direction of Mr George’s farm. He asked what Askew had in the basket on his shoulder. Looking inside he found the butter now produced tied up in a handkerchief. Askew said it was some butter he had from Barker at Knight Farm. He commented that it had not been made up. Askew said it was too soft and they could not make it up. He took him towards Barker’s. On the way Askew said “I told you a lie it is Mr George’s butter the lad gave it to me”. He took him to Mr George’s. Mr George said he had been churning that day and it looked like his. He compared it to some of the day’s butter which had not been made up and it appeared identical. He took Askew into custody. Lewis Askew – pleaded guilty and agreed to case being dealt with summarily at Sharnbrook Petty Sessions.
