- Scope and ContentLiving Gilks: he was a labourer and 16 years of age. He lived with his father, Thomas Gilks. George Gilks was his brother and Edwin William Gilks his cousin. On Monday 12 November he put 2 waistcoats, a pair of trousers and a black cloth coat in the box in his bedroom. On the following Wednesday, from what his mother said, he looked in the box. The clothing had gone. The value of the clothing was 15 shillings. The property was his fathers. His brother slept in the next room o him and he had a box of his own in the room. Another brother slept in the same room as him but did not put his clothes in the box. William Sheppard: he kept a second hand clothes shop in Leighton Buzzard and knew neither of the prisoners. On 14 November the prisoner, George Gilks, came to the shop and said he had some clothes to sell and that they were his own. Gilks said his name was Evans and he lived at Luton. He bought a pair of trousers, 2 waistcoats and a black cloth coat from the prisoner for 7s 6d. He went outside the shop and saw another boy with George Gilks, and they went away together. PC William Whinnett: he took George Gilks into custody on 15 November. He told him he was charged with stealing his brother's clothes. Gilks said he knew nothing about it but afterwards said he had sold the clothes for 4s 6d. The prisoner said “ain’t you going to take Ted he is as bad as I am. He went in the house with me and had part of the money”. He took Edwin William Gilks into custody and told him he was charged with stealing clothing in the company of George Gilks. Edwin William said he had not touched the clothes at all and had taken part of the money. Statement of the accused: nothing to say [both]
