    Tom Henry Coleman said: I am a Builder at Bedford – the prisoner has been in my employ about 3 years – During August and September this year je was employed by me on a house in Rothsay Road – Bedford, and between 20th August and 20th September this year I missed a quantity of building materials. On the 15th November with a search warrant in company with PS Pickering at prisoner’s house I identified the following materials as having been stolen from Rothsay House. [listed] 1 piece of plain glass; 2 3inch glazed tiles; 3 6x1½ border tiles; 6 2x2 border tiles; 9 6x6 border squares; 14 3x3 border squares; 7 6x3 border tiles; 2 6x1 border molded slips; 2 6x1 square slips; 9 bottles containing oil and turpentine the value of which is 10 shillings. [cross-examined] I missed the tiles the latter end of August. they were not removed from any other building. I had no suspicion of the prisoner until this time he was a shady and industrious man. Andrew Pickering said: I am a Police Sergeant at Arlesey. On Tuesday 15th November I went with PC Busby and Mr Coleman to the house of the prisoner with a search warrant when I found in the back bedroom A large piece of glass. In the front bedroom between the bedding I found [listed] 6 glazed squares; 2 glazed 3 inch tiles; 3 border tiles. In the coal hole I found 3 glazed square tiles In a cupboard in the living room I found 50 glazed tiles of various shapes and sizes. In the barn I found 9 glass bottles containing oil and turpentine. Mr Coleman identified them all as his property and I took possession of them and conveyed it to the Biggleswade Police Station, and I now produce them. [cross-examined by Mr Lockhart] The barn was full of tools of all description the things in the bed were on the top of the straw mattress and under the bed clothes.
