  • Scope and Content
Robert Stokes: Living at Mr. Buckeridge’s house. On the night of 23rd September he went to bed about 10pm. He had 5s 6d in a purse in his pocket. When he awoke about 9am on Sunday morning he noticed that his trousers had been moved and 5 shillings had been taken from his purse. At about 6am that morning he had been woken by a noise in his room. The prisoner was out of bed and he heard some money fall to the floor. The prisoner said to him that he had only dropped 2 halfpennies. The prisoner then left the room singing. When he got out of bed later that morning he found that the prisoner had left the house altogether. He informed Mr. Buckeridge that he was missing 5 shillings. Mr, Buckeridge told him that the prisoner had changed a sixpenny for a few provisions and 1 shilling over some clothes. He then gave information to the police. Henry Buckeridge: Chimney sweep from Luton. Robert Stokes and the prisoner were both lodging at his house. About 8am Sunday morning the prisoner asked him for some tea, sugar and a clean shirt and changed a sixpenny piece for the provisions. The prisoner then had a pair of trousers and a waistcoat upon which the prisoner gave him a shilling. The prisoner told him that if anyone asked about the clothes that he should tell them that the prisoner had them at first. He told the prisoner that he would only tell the truth if anyone asked. The prisoner then had breakfast and left before Robert Stokes got up. When Stokes got up he told him that he had lost money from his pocket. The prisoner came back about 2.30pm and he told the prisoner to leave the premises at once. James Kirby: Police constable of Luton. From information that he received he arrested the prisoner. In reply to the charge the prisoner said that he never had the money. John Palmer: Nothing to say.
