- Scope and ContentCharlotte Brown: he knew the prisoners and she had lodged at her house for 10 weeks up to 9 June. The prisoner left about 2pm on 9 June. About 5minutes later she went into her bedroom and missed her bonnet strings. She informed the police. On 22 June Inspector Smith showed her some bonnets strings which she identified. They were worth 1s 2d. Ann Smith: she lodged at Mr Brown’s at 6 John Street, Luton. She knew the prisoner as she lodged with Mr Brown up to 9 June, when she left about 2pm. She went up to her room about 10 minutes later and missed a pair of boots. She was shown the boots by Inspector Smith on 22 June. They were worth 3s 6d. William Hills: from information received he took the prisoner into custody at Tempsford on 21 June. He searched her and found the boots on her feet and she gave him the bonnet strings. He charged her and she replied he had bought the boots at her lodging. On being charged with the theft of the bonnet strings she said she had bought them at Luton at 9d a yard on the Saturday before Whitsunday. She also said that Mrs Brown had bought some in the morning and she had bought hers in the afternoon. She said there was an exchange about the boots. Statement of the accused: nothing.
