- Scope and ContentDeponent of Richard Gamby on his Oath saith as follows: I am a blacksmith and live at 17 Stuart Street Luton. Last Wednesday the 8th of June about 7 in the morning prisoner came to my house and asked for lodgings. He told me he was a signalman on the Great Northern Railway sent down from London the night before and he wanted to have his breakfast and go to bed. I supplied him with breakfast relying upon his statement and gave him a bed. The food was worth ten pence I asked him what station he worked at the day before and not being satisfied with his relies I made enquires at the Great Northern Railway Station and from what I was informed I gave him in charge. Deponent of John Ward of 67 Boyle Street Luton on his Oath saith: I am Inspector at the Great Northern Railway Station at Luton. I remember Gamby coming to make enquiries about a man named Simpson on the 8th [inst] The Prisoner has never been in the emply of the Great Northern Railway as signalman or anything else at Luton. Deponent of Detective Sergeant Chamberlain of the Luton Borough Police Force on his Oath saith. On the 8th instant from information I received I went to the prosectors house where I found the Prisoner in bed asleep, Prosecutor gave him into custody I searched him and finding him with obtaining food and lodgings by false pretence. He made no reply. Statement of Accused “Guilty Sir”
