- Scope and ContentCharles Smeeton: the accused had been in his employment for 18 months up to 31 May. Gilson’s had authority to receive money from his customers. Mr William Neal of Chawston was a customer of his. He weighted 8 pounds of beef for Mr Neal on 9 February and gave it to the accused to deliver with a ticket for 5 shillings. On 18 February he weighed 7 ¾ pounds of mutton and gave the mutton and a ticket for 4s 10d ½ to the accused. On 20 February he weighed a bladder of lard weighing 2 pounds 14 ounces and gave it to the accused with a ticket for 2s 5d to deliver to Mr Neal. He always asked the accused to when he returned who had paid him. Each day the accused told him Mr Neal had not paid. He sent 6 ¾ pounds of mutton on 1 March and the accused told him Mr Neal had not paid for it. William Neal: he was a publican at Chawston and a customer of Mr Smeeton. He purchased meat on 9, 18 and 20 of February. The accused delivered the meat to him on those days. He paid the accused knowing him to be Smeeton’s man.
