Depositions - Joseph Reynolds of Luton charged with stealing a round frock

Thomas Bigg of Luton, iron founder – last Saturday evening he was standing near the front of Mr Beales shop between 9 and 10pm and saw Reynolds take a round frock off the rail in front of the shop and chuck it to another man who ran up towards Park Street with it. Reynolds ran up the hill towards the market house. He went and told Mr Beale what he had seen and later went with him to look for Reynolds. He met Reynolds on the Market Hill and went down with him to Mr Beale’s. Mr Beale gave him into custody. Charles Sydney Beacroft of Luton ,apprentice – last Saturday he hung 4 round frocks on the rail in front of Mr Beale’s shop. About 9 or 10pm he was engaged with a customer near the window of the shop and saw Reynolds standing against the frock which later went missing, smoking a pipe. He remarked to the customer that he seemed to enjoy his pipe. The frock was there then. He went to the other side of the shop immediately afterwards and while he was making out the bill for the goods purchased by the customer he heard a frock had been stolen. He went out and missed the drab frock against which Reynolds had been standing.
