- Scope and ContentEdmund Piper of Langford, farmer – last Thursday 22 September there was a £5 note and 3 sovereigns in a purse under some clothes in a clothes box in his bedroom. There was also a sixpence and some other silver in a workbox in the same room. On Saturday he missed one of the sovereigns and the sixpence. He had reason to suspect Bennett Stimson, a boy who works for him. Stimson at first admitted he had got the sixpence but denied having anything to do with the sovereign. Stimson later admitted to taking them both out of his bedroom, fetched them and gave them to him. Stimson has worked for him for 3 or 4 years. William Rowell of Langford, labourer – he works for Mr Piper. Last Friday morning everyone was out of Piper’s house except himself and Stimson. Stimson went upstairs into Mr Piper’s bedroom and brought down a sixpence which he showed to him. Stimson told him he had seen 3 sovereigns in a purse upstairs, but did not say he had taken one of the sovereigns. Bennett Stimson – he showed both the sovereign and the sixpence to William Rowell, who was as bad as he was.
