A1 Biggleswade Plans of the proposed new bridge and road diversion crossing the River Ivel including detailed plans of Shortmead and Sun Streets. The scheme was postponed by the outbreak of war and an "Emergency Bridge" of steel sections was constructed in September 1939 alongside the existing bridge (See Section 13, County Surveyors Report, 21 October 1939. Ref: Hi/V/160/3) . This bridge became know as the Callendar - Hamilton No 1 Bridge and was further reconstructed in 1950 (See Section 28, County Surveyors Report, 14 October 1950, Ref: Hi/V/160/4 County Engineer: F W Smart, County Surveyor Original Refs: A1/11/1-3 and B2
