- Scope and ContentEliza Reynolds: wife of John Reynolds and living at the Rose & Crown public house at Caddington. On 15 August she was at the Volunteers fete at Luton. A woman by the name of Elizabeth Winters was with her. She saw the prisoner standing close to her right hand side. The prisoner had a great coat on his arm and a piece of paper in his right hand. She was going to put her hand in her pocket and saw the prisoner’s left hand in the pocket of her dress. She asked him “what business has your hand in my pocket”. The prisoner said nothing and walked off. Mr Pope took the prisoner into custody. Elizabeth Winters: she lived with her husband James in the ‘Compasses’ yard at Luton. She knew Mrs Reynolds and was with her at the Rifle Fete on 15 August. She saw the prisoner standing on the right hand side of Mrs Reynolds, close to her. The prisoner had a brown coat on his arm. She heard Mrs Reynolds ask him what business his hand had in her pocket. The prisoner walked away and Mr Pope took him into custody. George Cain: a warehouseman living in Hastings Street, Luton. On 15 August he was at the Rifle Fete and he saw the prisoner there. The prisoner had an overcoat on his left arm. He also saw Mrs Reynolds there and she was standing in front of him listening to the singing. The prisoner was at first standing in front of Mrs Reynolds and then went and stood by her right hand side. He saw the prisoner put his hand into Mrs Reynolds pocket and then saw him take it out. The prisoner moved very quickly. Mrs Reynolds asked him what he was at having his hand in her pocket and Cain fetched Mr Pope. Statement of the accused: he reserved his defence.
