- Scope and ContentEphraim Hooker: a labourer working for Mr Holinshead at Thrales End Farm in Luton. On 3 April he left his clothes in the mess house at the farm. They were safe at 6am and he missed them about 8am. A week later PC Allen showed him show clothes and he identified them as those he missed from the mess house. They were worth 18 shillings. James Coleman: a labourer who was living at New Mill End but now resided at Limbury. The prisoner was his son. On Sunday morning, some time ago, this son brought the clothes to his house. He put on the coat and it fitted. He asked his son where he had got it from and his son said he had bought it off a chap that came from Welwyn. He afterwards gave the clothes to Mary Welch so that the prisoner might not take them from the house whilst he was away. When PC Allen came, he fetched the clothes from Mrs Welch and gave them to him. Mary Welch: they had lived next door to Coleman in April at New Mill End. Coleman brought a bundle of clothes for her to take care of. She gave it back to him when he came to fetch it. PC John Allen: a police constable stationed at Chiltern Green. On 13 August he apprehended William Coleman on his release from gaol. He charged him with stealing 2 coats, a vest, a pair of trousers, a pair of braces, a shirt, a pair of stockings, 2handkerchiefs, a cap. 2 ½ lbs of pork, a loaf of bread, 1s 9d in money and a pipe on the 3 April from Ephraim Hooker at Thrales End. Coleman said he knew nothing about it but he expected it would go to trial this time. The clothes were recovered from the prisoners father on 8 June. Statement of the accused: nothing.
