- Scope and ContentJames Carrington of Potton – he is agent to John Prior of Newbury (Berks) and receives his rents and has the care of a house at Biggleswade, Prior’s property, which is occupied by Ann Whittemore, sister of the prisoner. On 18 May he missed a deaden sink which was fixed in the house and was John Prior’s property. He enquired at Mr Morton’s if such an item had been offered for sale. Morton said it had and showed him the lead. He went to the place and compared it – he can swear it is a part of the stolen sink. It was worth more than 7s. He saw the brother and asked him to go with him to Mr Morton’s, but he objected and ran away. He had not heard of Whittemore since until he was taken yesterday. Thomas Morton of Biggleswade, ironmonger – on 5 May James Whittemore came to his shop with some lead (now produced) which he offered for sale. He asked where it came from and Whittemore said he found it in Langford Lane. He did not give Whittemore anything for it as he suspected it was stolen. He detained the lead and would not let Whittemore take it away. Whittemore came again and said the lead was his brother’s and that he would fetch his brother to come and own it. Whittemore went away and never returned. The lead fits correctly with the sink.
