- Scope and ContentElizabeth Bush: wife of Joseph of no.2 Upper Bute Street in Luton where they had a shoe shop. On Tuesday 15 December 1863 the prisoner came to the shop about 4pm and asked to look at some boots for her son. She was shown some and asked to be allowed to pay so much a week for them. She asked the prisoner where he son worked and was told “at Mr Seymour’s”. Elizabeth said she knew them well and if Mr or Mrs Seymour would be answerable then the prisoner could have them. The prisoner told her Mrs Seymour would as she had just left her house. The prisoner took the boots away with her. From information received she sent for the prisoner and gave the information to the police. Frances Seymour: wife of Jonathan and resided at 19 Guildford Street, Luton. She did not know the prisoner. She never authorised her to obtain any boots in her name or her husband’s. PC James Haynes: on 13 May he took the prisoner into custody as she came out of gaol. The prisoner said she had the boots and had sold them to a woman in the street who she did not know. She said she had not used Mrs Seymour’s name and she ahd sold the boots as they did not fit her boy. Statement of the accused: nothing.
