George Underwood: on 11 April he missed 2 half bred teg sheep from a field called Payne’s Field on the side of the road leading from Hempstead to Dunstable. From information he received he went to Luton police station on 19 April and saw 2 teg sheep there. He could swear to one of these sheep being his property and believed the other to be so too. The sheep were worth £5. George Cook: shepherd to Mr Underwood. On 5 April he counted the sheep and they were all right. On 11 April he missed 2 of them. He had since seen the sheep at Luton police station. The flock size was 103; 31 sheep and the rest being tegs. [detailed description of sheep] Jesse Thorn: he was head shepherd to Mr Underwood. He saw 2 sheep at Luton police station and knew them to belong to his master. [detailed description of sheep] PC William Brimley: on 17 April he was at Thomas Marlow’s house at Toddington in charge of some sheep. 2 sheep identified as Mr Underwood’s were locked in the barn. He asked the prisoner’s wife for the key and she said it was in her husband’s pocket. He broke open the door and took the sheep to Luton. The sheep were identified by Mr Underwood and his shepherds. Sergeant Benjamin George: he knew the prisoner as he lived near his house in Toddington. He was present when the 2 sheep were found. He could not say if the prisoner’s wife said he had the key. Superintendent Samuel Pope: the prisoner had been in his custody for some time. On 25 April he told the prisoner there was another charge against him for stealing the sheep of Mr Underwood. The prisoner said he knew nothing of the charge. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
