- Scope and ContentApprenticeship Indenture:William Jesse Fooks to John Payne of Ridgmont, wheelwright. Indenture: William Jesse Fooks son of Thomas Fooks of Woburn, labourer (with the consent of his said father) doth put himself apprentice to John Payne of Ridgmont, wheelwright to learn his art and with him in the manner of an apprentice to serve from the day of the date hereof for the term of five years or until he the said apprentice shall attain the age of twenty one years. During which term the said apprentice shall faithfully serve his said Master in all lawful businesses according to his power skill and ability and behave himself towards his said Master honestly orderly and obediently in all things. John Payne in consideration of the sum of fifteen pounds to him paid by the said Thomas Fooks on the execution of these presents (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged) and the services of the said William Jesse Fooks…do hereby accept and take the said William Jesse Fooks as his apprentice and shall and will teach and instruct or cause to be taught & instructed the said apprentice the trade or business of a wheelwright. And shall and will find and provide for the use of the said apprentice sufficient and proper tools (except an axe, a saw and a plane) and the said John Payne hereby covenants and agrees to pay unto is said apprentice in lieu and full satisfaction of his board and lodging clothes washing medicine and all other necessaries during the said term the wages of two shillings weekly from the day of the date hereof for the space of six months thence next, the sum of two shillings and sixpence weekly for the space of six months thence next following, the sum of three shillings and sixpence during the second year of the said term, the sum of five shillings weekly during the third year of the said term Thomas Fooks doth hereby agree that the said apprentice shall and will take the wages in lieu of board, lodging, clothes, washing , medicine and all other necessaries. Thomas Fooks shall and will provide for his said son the following tools to be used by him during the said apprenticeship – an axe, a saw, and a plane. If it shall happen that William Jesse Fooks shall at any time during the said term from illness or on any account whatsoever be absent from the business and employment of the said Thomas Payne …then such of the same weekly payments…shall not be payable.
