- Scope and ContentApprenticeship Indenture: Thomas Lucas Clayton. Indenture between William Johnson of Woburn, gentleman and Fanny his wife (late Fanny Clayton, widow) and Thomas Lucas Clayton son of the said Fanny Johnson by John Clayton her former husband decease of the one part and Gregory Odell Clarke of Fenny Stratford, County of Buckingham, Merchant, of the other part. Thomas Lucas Clayton by and with consent of his said mother hath put and bound himself apprentice to the said Gregory Odell Clarke to be taught and instructed in the trades of businesses of a coal merchant, corn merchant, timber merchant, master brickmaker and all other trades businesses or employments carried on by the said Gregory Odell Clarke from the day of the date hereof for the term of six years or until the said Apprentice shall arrive at the age of twenty one years. Gregory Odell Clarke in consideration of the sum of Ninety pounds to be paid to him by the said Fanny Johnson at or before the sealing of these presents (the receipt of whereof he the said Gregory Odell Clarke hereby acknowledged) doth hereby accept and take the said Thomas Lucas Clayton as his apprentice in the trade or business of a coal merchant, corn merchant, timber merchant, master brickmaker which he now uses and carries on….and doth covenant and agree to find and provide for the said Thomas Lucas Clayton sufficient and proper meat drink and lodging. William Johnson for himself and Fanny his said wife doth hereby agree with Gregory Odell Clarke his executors and administrators that he the said Thomas Lucas Clayton shall and will during all the said term well and truly serve the said Gregory Odell Clarke as an apprentice in the trade or business of a coal merchant, corn merchant, timber merchant, master brickmaker diligently attending to the business or concerns of his Master doing no damage or injury to his said Master nor knowingly suffering the same to be done without acquainting his said Master thereof but shall and will in all respects acquit and demean himself as an honest and faithful apprentice ought to do and shall and will take and accept the sums of six, eight and ten shillings weekly in lieu and full satisfaction for board & lodging washing clothes and all other necessaries during the said term. Fanny Johnson shall and will find and provide for Thomas Lucas Clayton her son fit and proper clothing and necessaries during all the said term (save & except those covenanted to be found and provided by the said Gregory Odell Clarke Gregory Odell Clarke agrees with William Johnson and Fanny his wife that he the said Gregory Odell Clarke according to the best of his power skill and knowledge shall and will during all the said term teach and instruct or cause to be taught & instructed the said Thomas Lucas Clayton in the trade or business of a coal merchant, corn merchant, timber merchant, master brickmaker and all other business carried on by the said Gregory Odell Clarke.
