- Scope and ContentWilliam Wren: he was the assistant to Mr Joseph Allen in George Street, Luton. On the evening of Friday 16 October the prisoner came to the shop and asked for a piece of calico. She was supplied with a penny worth. He watched the prisoner as she left the shop and saw her turn around a take a piece of linsey. He ran after her and went across the road after her and caught hold of her arm. He told her to take it back and she replied “yes my dear I will”. The piece of linsey bore a private mark and was worth 7 shillings. Joseph Allen: he was sent for on the 16 October and found Mr Wren against the door of the shop, with Mrs Eddy inside. Mr Wren gave him the linsey. He gave the prisoner into custody and gave the linsey to PC Smith. Eddy asked him to let her go. PC Frederick Smith: the prisoner was given into his custody on 16 October and he charged her with stealing the linsey. She replied “well”. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
