  • Scope and Content
James Roberts: he resided in Maulden. On the day of the Aylesbury Fair, on 25 September he was at the White Hart inn at Hockcliffe with a horse and a cart. He left a great coat, the value for 4 or 5 shillings in the cart. He returned to the cart and missed his coat. In consequence of what he was told he went down the road in search of the prisoner and saw him in Hack’s yard. He told the prisoner he wanted him to go up to Mr Heckford’s with him and when they got there he told the prisoner to find his coat. The prisoner said he knew nothing about it. Others said to the prisoner that he should fetch the coat if he knew where it was. He sat down and in about 20 minutes the coat was brought to him by Thomas Bowler. When they drove to Mr Heckford’s the prisoner helped him to put out the stable and give him some hay. Constance Pickering: housekeeper to John Heckford, keeper of the White Horse in Hockcliffe. On 25 September the prisoner was in the house and a man by the name of Roberts drove into the yard. She saw the prisoner take a great coat from the cart and take it into the stable. Kilby had no business in the yard. Roberts left and missed his great coat. She told him she had seen it taken from the cart. Roberts sent for the prisoner who denied, in her presence, he had taken the coat. Thomas Bowler: he was at the White Horse Inn at Hockcliffe on 25 September. He heard Roberts say he had lost his coat. The prisoner was sent for and was questioned by several present about the coat. He asked the prisoner if he knew where the coat was and the prisoner replied it was in the stable. He found the great coat in the stable. There was a little straw over it but not enough to hide it. He took the coat to Roberts. Statement of the accused: he reserved his defence.
