- Scope and ContentRachel Bodsworth: wife of George, keeper of the White Horse public house at Stopsley. The prisoner was in the Tap room about 10am on 16 September and was sat on a seat as though asleep. Mrs Garratt was came in whilst Bean was there. She gave Mrs Garratt a shilling, a 3 penny piece and a penny to pay for the some things she was to bring her from Luton. Mrs Garratt lay the money on the mantle shelf in the Tap room and went into the bar to speak to her. They returned 2 or 3 minutes later and found the money and the prisoner gone. She told her brother who brought back the prisoner and gave her the money. She sent for PC Allen and gave the prisoner into custody. There was no one but the prisoner in the Tap room. Maria Garratt: she went to Mrs Bodsworth’s as she was going to Luton. Mrs Bodsworth gave her a shilling, a 3 penny bit and a penny to get some things for her in Luton. The prisoner was in the Tap room and seemed asleep. There was no one there but him. She laid the money on the shelf in the Tap room and went into the bar with Mrs Bodsworth for a few minutes. When they went back the money and the prisoner had gone. The prisoner and the money were brought back. John Dumpleton: he was the brother to Rachel Bodsworth. On 16 September, from what he was told by his sister, he went after the prisoner and found him at the blacksmith’s shop. He asked the prisoner how much money he had about him and the prisoner said none. The prisoner pulled off his coats and told Dumpleton to search him. He heard money rattle in the coat pocket and found a penny, a shilling and threepenny bit. He took the prisoner and money back to Mrs Bodsworth. PC John Allen: he took the prisoner into custody and marked the coins. He charged the prisoner, who replied he was innocent of it but he was welcome to take him. Statement of the accused: he was in Bodsworth’s house but did not see any money. There was a score of people in and out. He had the money for 2 days from threshing wheat. The money was left from that.
