- Scope and ContentEmma Vinter: she was at the market at Shefford. She stood in the crowd and went to buy a brooch of the auctioneer. It was a little before noon. The prisoner stood against her. She had a purse in her pocket with nearly 10 shillings in it. Besides the silver there was some copper money and a farthing with a hole in it. It was given to her as a keepsake. She bought a brooch and paid for it and then put her money in her purse and her purse in her pocket. She missed it a few minutes later. She was sure of the farthing shown to her. PC Reuben Pepper: the farthing was part of the money taken from the prisoner at the Crown on Saturday. He found 15 shillings and sixpence in the purse and a shilling and 7 pence 3 farthings loose in her pocket. Charlotte Vinter: she was sister to Emma Vinter and she had looked at the farthing presented by PC Pepper. A young man gave it to her sister about 3 years ago. She had seen it many times since and could swear to it. Statement of the accused: she was not guilty.
