  • Scope and Content
James Bradshaw of Tempsford, labourer – during last May a sheet of his was hanging out to dry on a hedge in Tempsford. It is a quick hedge and divides his brother Thomas’ garden from the highway just on the south side of Tempsford. His wife called out to him and said a man who was then in sight had stolen the sheet. The man was getting over a gate. He ran after the man and overtook him. The man had a sheet over his arm. He told him it was his sheet. The man said it was not. He said it was, and the man threw the sheet down on the ground saying that if it was his he might have it. He tok the sheet up and took the man into custody. He was angry with the man and knocked him down twice. They put the man (Galer) in the cage and left him there until 6 o’clock. Browning the constable then persuaded him to let Galer out. Afterwards Mr Cole his master ordered him to go to Mr Thornton the magistrate about it, who issued a warrant to take Galer again. David Morton, son of Richard Morton, late of Tempsford, labourer – last spring a little before haytime he saw Galer take a sheet from the hedge belonging to Mr Thomas Bradshaw’s garden and go up the close with it. He hallooed after him. Galer ran. He then told Mrs Bradshaw. They ran after Galer and he ran with with until they caught him and took the sheet away. He is sure it was the man now present. David Galer – he was waking along the road and saw the sheet lying in the ditch. He picked it up. They came after him and he told him that if it was their sheet they might have it. Bradshaw knocked him down twice and told him to be off home. After they put him in the cage his wife borrowed 2s and paid it to Thomas Browning the constable to let him out. They did so, but later took him again.
