- Scope and ContentJoseph Byewaters of Henlow, labourer – on Saturday night a fortnight ago he heard his master Mr Ell’s dog bark. It was late, nearly 12am. He called his master up and they both went down into the yard together. While his master went to get a lantern he saw somebody coming across the yard. The man said “what Joe, are you here?” He knew then it was Trigg. He saw Trigg had a hen in his hands and asked what he was going to do with it. Trigg answered that he was going to kill it, and told him not to say anything about it. He told Trigg master was just behind and would see it. Trigg then threw the hen over the gate. Just then his master came into the yard. John Ell of Henlow, farmer – on 18 December between 12 and 1am Byewaters came to him as he was in bed and told him somebody was in the yard. He got up and they both went into the yard. It was dark and he went to light a lantern. Soon after Byewaters called out “here! The rogue!” He went up and saw it was Trigg. He asked Trigg what he wanted there. Trigg said he was going to lie down. He told Trigg to leave his premises.
