  • Scope and Content
William Fleming of Leighton Buzzard, fellmonger – he is employed by Mr Jabez Hughes. Yesterday about 1.45pm Allen brought 2 sheepskins to his master’s yard at Leighton Buzzard and offered them for sale for 9s. He said they belonged to Mr Heley of Wing. He bought them for his master for 7s. George Chandler of Leighton Buzzard, labourer – he is employed by Jabex Hughes, fellmonger. Yesterday about 1pm Samuel Chapman of Tilsworth, courier brought 2 sheepskins and a piece of fat to the place in the market at Leighton Buzzard where his master buys skins. Chapman said he brought them from George Crawley of Stanbridge and that his master was to give 10s for them. His master was not present. Chandler said he was going down to the wharf and would leave the skins with him. He put them on his master’s barrow and went to dinner. He was absent about ½ hour. When he came back the skins were gone. George Crawley of Stanbridge, butcher – yesterday he told Samuel Chapman to take 2 sheepskins to Mr Hughes and to bring back 10s if Mr Hughes could afford to give so much for them. Chapman did not bring the money and he went that morning to collect it from Mr Hughes. Mr Hughes was not at home. Mrs Hughes said the skins had been stolen out of a barrow. The two skins now produced are the skins he lost. He knows them by the brand, the wool, and the way in which the sheep were skinned. They are worth 7s. Samuel Chapman of Tilsworth, carrier – on Tuesday morning 15 November George Crawley gave him 2 sheepskins and a piece of tallow to convey to Leighton to Mr Jabez Hughes. He was to get 10s for them if possible. He left the skins and tallow in the market place with Mr Hughes’s boy, Chandler. He called back but the skins were gone and he could not find Mr Hughes nor the boy. He was shown 2 sheepskins at Leighton Buzzard on 30 December by William Fleming which he believes to be the same.
