- Scope and ContentJames Thomas: keeper of the Wellington Arms in Luton. The pair of brass candlesticks produced were his property and he had had them in his possession for 20 years. On 3 September he saw them safe on the mantle piece in the tap room. On 5 September the prisoner was in the tap room. On 11 September he was asked by the police whether he had lost any brass candlesticks. He went home to look for them and found them gone. They were worth 3 shillings. Hannah Warren: on 5 September she bought her candlesticks from the prisoner for a shilling. The prisoner told her he had picked them up on the road near Crystal Palace. She asked him several times and he said he was sure he had found them. PC Thomas Bradshaw: on 9 September he received the candlesticks from Mrs Warren. On 12 September he had the prisoner in custody and charged him with stealing them. The prisoner said he was innocent of the charge. Statement of the accused: nothing.
