- Scope and ContentMary Shepherd: her husband kept the Griffin public house in Toddington. She had often seen the prisoner in Toddington and believed him to live there. The prisoner occasionally came to the house. On 6 August the prisoner came to the Griffin and said he had been to Bedford for Mr Dexter and he was to have some beer and Mr Dexter would pay. Mr Dexter was a customer of theirs. The prisoner said he was to have a pot or 2 of beer or what he liked. She told him she would rather have a note from Mr Dexter but the prisoner said it was all right and she served him with 3 quarts of beer in the tap room. The prisoner left about 10pm and she scored the beer to Mr Dexter. The prisoner said he had been working with Mr Dexter’s machine. On 12 August the prisoner came again and said he was to going to work again with Mr Dexter’s machine and had been sent for more beer. He said Dexter would be there shortly to pay for it. She served him 2 quarts of beer which he drank on the premises. The prisoner wanted more but she would not let him have it until she had seen Mr Dexter. The value of the 5 quarts of beer was 1s 8d. On 2 September she saw Mr Dexter and told him the prisoner had 5 quarts of beer in his name. Dexter said he knew nothing of it. John Dexter: he knew the prisoner by sight and he had worked for him. He had not authorised the prisoner to get beer from the Griffin and had not sent him to Bedford. Sergeant Benjamin George: on 5 September he took the prisoner into custody at Tingrith and told him he was charged with obtaining 5 quarts of beer from the Griffin at Toddington in Mr Dexter’s name. The prisoner said he meant to pay for it and it was the first time he had done anything of that kind and it would be the last. He took the prisoner to the lock up at Woburn. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
