- Scope and ContentAbraham Kennedy: from information received he went to Retford and received the prisoner into custody. He told the prisoner the charge and the prisoner admitted the offence. The prisoner was not be remanded until the next Petty Session on 23 August but which time he expected to be full prepared with the evidence. Thomas Woodward: a farm bailiff of Cardington in the service of Mr White. On the night of 14 July an ox was taken from afield in the occupation of Mr White. He had seen the ox about 8pm on 14 July and missed it about 6am the next morning. He saw the ox at Mr Lows at Clophill on 21 July. He considered the value of the bullock to be £16. William Moulden: a butcher of Stevenage in Hertfordshire. On 13 or 14 July he bought a bullock from the prisoner at Hitchin Market. He had never seen the prisoner before. He sold the bullock to Charles Mossman on the same day. He gave £12 for the bullock. Charles Mossman: a salesman of Ganwic [?] Corner near Barnet, Herts. He bought a bullock on 15 July from William Moulden at Hitchin. He sold it to Robert on the same day. PC Abraham Kennedy: he took the prisoner into custody and the prisoner asked what punishment he thought he would get. Kennedy said he could not tell and the prisoner said he was pleased it was not from a poor man he had stolen the bullock but from a man who could afford to lose it. The prisoner also said he intended to plead guilty and he had received £12 for the bullock but thought it worth £18 10s. Robert Low: a cattle dealer at Clophill. On 15 July he brought a bullock off Charles Mossman at Hitchin Market and the bullock was taken to his residence on 18 July and had remained there since.
