Depositions and examination - Charles Carey of Moggerhanger charged with stealing 2 hives of bees from James Smith Gardener

Elizabeth Elliott of Blunham, widow – she keeps the Three Horse Shoes at Blunham. On the Saturday before Mr Gardner came to her house about his bees. Charles Carey was in her house drinking with some other young men. Carey asked if she would buy 2 hives of bees. She had heard that he kept them in partnership with his grandfather and that they had a quarrel and that was the reason he sold them. She bought them for 8s and he brought them to her in the evening. They remained in her possession until Mr Gardner fetched them away on 12 May or thereabouts. James Smith Gardner of Warden – one either 11th or 12th April he lost two hives of bees. On 4th May he found two hives at Mrs Elliot’s, the sign of the Three Horse Shoes at Blunham. He can swear to one of them as his property. Mrs Elliot told him she bought them from Carey for 8s. He knows the hives by the places where he had mended them. Charles Carey – “They were not Mr Gardner’s bees. They were at our place three weeks before the time when Mr Gardner says he lost his.”
